Appendicitis can be cause by infection, a fecalith (smaller than feces) that caused the opening of the appendix to be blocked thus inflammation occurs and this inflammation causes pain. But the pain as said by the patient can be vague and experiencing abdominal pain on the lower part doesn't mean appendicitis all the time, it should be assessed accurately upon admission on the emergency room. You will be then undergoing physical examination, blood test to confirm diagnosis and to schedule you for appendectomy. This is an emergency case because once the inflamed appendix rupture it can cause generalized peritonitis, an exploratory laparotomy with appendectomy will then be performed.

Appendectomy is the medical term when the appendix will be removed due to inflammation and infection. It can be done in two ways, either be open or traditional surgery, wherein the surgeon will cut a small portion (approximately 2 - 3 inches) on the lower right part of the abdomen (where the appendix is located). The other is the laparoscopic approach, where in a laparoscopic surgeon will use a specialized gadget to perform the procedure and only a small incision (approximately 1 inch) will be seen.  There are lots of differences to be considered with this two approach, a skilled surgeon can performed open or traditional surgery in less than an hour while the laparoscopic approach needs more time to prepare and as I said, it uses specialized gadgets, which means more expense on your part but the appendix surgery recovery if fast unlike the open type.

Appendix surgery recovery depends on what technique you chose and based on your case. If it is treated in the earliest time, your recovery is mostly likely be fast. Mild discomforts are expected after surgery and a pain medication will prescribed. You will be on bed rest for few days to prevent complications and to hasten the appendix surgery recovery. For open appendectomy, most likely, you will be at hospital for about 7 to 10 days while 4 to 6 days if laparoscopic approached. You will be scheduled to return for follow up appointment after two weeks. You will be advised to observe the incision and report immediately when the pain is worsening, the incision is warm to touch and if there is a discharge.
